Seeing is Believing

As a professor of literacy methods for the undergraduate teacher education department at George Fox University, I have used videos to give my students opportunities to see teachers using methods and materials we are studying in elementary classrooms. However, professionally produced videos are expensive and often too long for frequent use.

I chose to focus my OTEN grant on learning how to shoot digital video and to edit it, using iMovie, for use in my methods classes. As I gain experience and confidence, I also plan to begin to provide opportunities for students in my methods courses to learn how to make and edit their own digit videos.

What I plan to share today.

• The equipment used to create the videos
• Cannon ZR 300
• iBook G4- OS Tiger
• iMovie application

• The process used to create the videos

• I visited two student teachers who had informed me that they were trying innovative ideas in their full time student teaching

• I made a video recording of the student teachers and, where appropriate, the children in their classes.

• I transferred in the recorded video to the iBook using a firewire connection.

• I used the iMovie application to edit, sequence, and add transitions and titles. I also used voice over to create more context for the video clips.

• My goal was to create videos of about 4 to 5 minutes in duration.

• A demonstration of the videos using the iBook.
