Digital Documentation in Teacher Education: Enhancing Collaboration, Lesson Design and Teacher Reflection

This project was designed to assist students in the process of planning, implementing, and reflecting on the teaching of a lesson.  Students synthesized and applied materials regarding the design and implementation of lesson plans, teacher reflection, collaboration with their mentor teacher and the use of digital video to document and tell a story.  Come see some great examples of student videos.

Digital Media in the Classroom: To Inspire and Engage

Motivating and engaging students is one of an educators greatest challenges. So, we wanted to open up the possibilities to our future teachers to explore how technology can effectively improve their instruction and assessment. Through the use of digital cameras, education students were able to explore the many ways digital pictures can enhance PowerPoint, Inspiration, Publisher, WebPages, ePortfolios, etc. as means to motivate and engage students.  The possibilities are endless.  We are just getting started.  Learn from our mistakes and get inspired by our successes.

Online Discussion: Collaborative web based learning environment

This project is a collaboration between Willamette University (WU) and Pacific University (PU). Students from WU will have an opportunity for direct interaction in Spanish with students at PU through electronic threaded discussions. This interaction will offer an opportunity for collaboration and generation of ideas as well as practicing Spanish language skills online. The project aims to encourages students to continue to develop communicative competency by sharing ideas and information, that in turn, will enhance face-to-face communication.

Bringing Digital Art to the Field

The one thing that has been lacking in this very intense weeklong workshop is the digital aspect. The grant will allow me to have students use digital cameras in the field and then down load their images onto a laptop. This will enable them to see the image in the field for discussion and critique. Back at our living quarters the students will be able to work with Photoshop and their images to enhance them.

E-Portfolios as a Hiring Tool for Pre-Service Teachers

Having heard many anecdotal stories, both positive and negative, about the use and acceptance of electronic portfolios as a tool in the hiring process of pre-service teachers, this project focused on:
1. Survey of selected building principals.
2. Pilot of MAT students creating professional teaching electronic portfolios tailored to showcase artifacts from their program of study and focused as a hiring tool for these pre-service teachers.

Sprechen, Filmen, Schneiden: Advanced-Intermediate German Students and Digital Film Production

Three of my students from my advanced-intermediate German course and I will present on making a movie in German using digital video technology and iMovie based on a German novel we read this semester. My goals in creating this assignment were to encourage students to engage creatively with a work of literature, introduce students to technology vocabulary in German, and to help them increase their written and spoken proficiency of German through the creation and production of film dialogue. Students will report on their experiences during the production of their film. I will report on successes of the project and ideas for how I will approach the project differently next time.

Digital Music Techniques and Animation

This presentation will describe an ongoing collaboration between Digital Music Techniques (Music) and Animation (Computer Science) courses. Fall 2003 saw our first implementation of an integrated co-curriculum for the 2 classes. Students developed skill and insight with regard to 1) the “mechanics” of creating interacting visual and sound elements, 2) the aesthetics of interacting visual and sound elements, 3) the nature of multimedia collaboration in general, and in particular the disciplinary perspectives and challenges in that collaboration.
The model developed this year has served as the basis for 3 year grant application, proposed with a view towards 1) widening the collaboration to include several departments, 2) developing an Arts and Technology minor which will prepare students to be aesthetically sensitive developers and critical consumers of multimedia works.

Teachers as Support Systems to Parents of students Identified with Special Needs

A digital camcorder was used to obtain testimonies from parents of children from special need population. The discourse allowed preservice teachers to confront issues within the educational system. Sharing of authentic experiences of preservice teachers engaging with parents of children with special needs was also filmed.

Using Technology to Document Children's Representations of Knowledge

Early childhood educators recognize that children use various forms of communicating to share knowledge.  These "languages" include the visual arts, drama, and music.  This project features the documentation of young children's knowledge through art and drama.  Using digital photography and audio recordings the teacher educator demonstrates how technology can be implemented in the early childhood classroom to document the representation of children's knowledge.

Teaching Modern Art Through the Process of Change

Many students come to art classes with little or no understanding of how modern art works are produced.  In many of my studio art classes I teach the students that change is critical to the making of modern/contemporary art.  I am using the new technology to produce teaching materials and techniques that illustrate this process of learning.
