Eva La Mar - Keynote Speaker
Now you’re cooking! Life-long learners in the curriculum kitchen!
Local ingredients for an international experience
Standards driven curriculum and high stakes testing often render curriculum stale and dull. As a consumer of food we know that we can’t eat the same thing every meal or every day- we need diversity, balanced meals, variety in presentation and to build a desire to eat a healthy meal. The same can be said about curriculum as we often forsake the excitement for learning in the drive for “results”. How do we develop a community of life long learners who are able to compete and work in the global community? We know that a standards-based lesson must have specific elements, but as in with a healthy and tasty meal; if well presented and prepared for the diversity of the dinner table community, or classroom community, it will stir a desire to come back for more; to develop that desire for life-long learning. The student discovers that learning is nourishing and an enjoyable part of living. They learn an understanding of the standards as well as love for discovery and learning as a process itself. Eva La Mar will discuss how educators can look locally and act globally with project-based learning! Learn about her CSI: Cemetery Scene Investigators project as she discusses the main ingredients that are available in all neighborhoods worldwide.
About Eva La Mar
Since graduating from California Poly-Technic State University in 1990, Eva La Mar has taught 6th grade GATE, 6th grade ESL, 4th grade GATE, 3rd grade GATE, and adult education. For the last four years she has traveled across the US as a Senior Trainer conducting “train the trainer” sessions for the Intel Teach to the Future program. Eva has also presented workshops, poster sessions, and traditional sessions at many different conferences. She has earned her “Cross Culture and Language Acquisition and Development” certificate from UC Davis, her “Online Learning and Teaching” certificate from CSU Hayward, and is in process of completing her MS in Online Learning and Teaching. Current Eva serves as the One-to-One Laptop Initiative Program Development Specialist for Springfield Public Schools.

As an educator Eva launched The Geo-Literacy Project. The Geo-Literacy Project is now used in schools across the country and has been featured in multiple magazines, web sites, and in many colleges of education. Eva has also won numerous awards across the curricular areas for her innovative use of technology. Included in this is using clay animation to model plate tectonics, QTVR object movies of Indian artifacts and wildlife skeletons, QTVR movies of historic locations, and digital movies to show higher order thinking skills. Eva’s focus in on the power of collaboration: be it between students, teachers, specialists in the field, and/or working with local universities. In 2004 Linda Ferguson became a co-director of The Geo-Literacy Project and began having students collaborate over the miles as well as with experts in the field. Eva has also been collaborating with Don Bain of the Geography Department at the University of California, Berkeley as well as with other universities. Students across the age levels collaborate with each other as well as with local organizations, museums and specials in the field.
