Primarily Used for Assessment Purposes

http://www.geocities.com/saddleshoekid_2000/welcome.html

Advantages

Can include variety of data sources once it is digitized

Takes up less space

Involves several layers and kinds of artifacts

Can be a motivator for students

Helps students develop technological skills

Allows students to publish their work

Easy to update

Saves paper

Disadvantages

Learning the technological skills can consume lots of time for teacher and student

Medium can get in the way of learning

Content can be lost when students spend time with clip art, photos, background, etc.

Quickly outdating technology--what we can read today maybe can't tomorrow--zips, cd's, dvd's, etc.

Becomes just another way to store and present artifacts

It provides proof of learning rather than facilitates learning

Reconsider the Concept of Portfolio: Focus First on "Portfolio" and Second on "Digital"

Consider going beyond using it just as an assessment tool

Consider going beyond using it as a presentation tool--don't worry about images, background, etc.

Consider using the medium to display student work as well as incorporate student analysis and reflection
