Powerful Projection
|
I acquired a video projector that I used in my classroom on a daily basis. It was used to enhance lessons, character development, as a motivational tool, and to create a sense of excitement in the classroom. It became an invaluable tool that I will use far into the future.

Video Recorded & Televised Book Reviews
|
Through the use of a digital camcorder, students are provided with an opportunity to share their work in front of their peers allowing students to gain self-confidence, as well as validating that what they have to say is important. In "Reading Rainbow" fashion, I have recorded students giving a book talk and sharing literature that they have read. My 2nd grade students are expected to summarize what they have read in their own words, express whether they would recommend the story to their peers, and describe what they liked the most/least about the story. By televising the speeches to the classroom, students are able to assess themselves on their ability to speak audibly and logically. With experience, I would expect marked improvements in their public speaking.

Fantasy Fiction Comes Alive!
|
Students connect with other third graders across the United States in order to identify and learn about how to analyze and understand literature and imaginative writing. By using a tool called the Aiptek Hyperpen, email, the computer, and the internet, students were able to analyze events within a piece of literature, coordinate their data with their group members, use a technology tool to increase their writing skills and use their knowledge of fantasy fiction to create their own imaginative pieces of writing.

Creating Class Books with Digital Cameras
|
There are a number of ways to use digital cameras in the classroom. One way to get students excited about the material and involved in the learning process is using class books. Focusing on dental health and nutrition, the students created a plan (using sequencing and ordinals) on the steps they took to care for their teeth and make a healthy snack. They then created it into a class book.

Using a digital camera that I bought with my mini grant I created two different slide shows for parents and my students. The first slide show was: Read across America-Grandparents and special friend's day. I ran the program for the students and parents.
The second slide show was: A project completed with my Kindergarten class and their fifth grade buddies. We did a DBAE art lesson with a picture by Matisse. Then the students created their own art together. The fifth graders and Kindergarteners were able to view the slide show together. It will also be shown Art Night for parents.

Using a Digital Camera to Keep Students Interested and Parents Informed
|
I used a digital camera in a third grade classroom to take photos of various student activities. These activities varied from art projects, to writing and reading, to celebrations, field trips, and parties. Once these pictures were compiled, a monthly newsletter was compiled and sent home to each students parents. The students then read the letter with his/her parent. Students were also taught how to use the camera and loved it. They loved taking pictures and seeing their picture on the screen before their very eyes. So, through this students are excited about learning new technology and parents are thrilled to see what their students are doing.

Romeo and Juliet is a required piece of literature for most 9th grade high school English classes. Although it is required, rarely do student find it enjoyable or worth remembering. One of the main obstacles cited by students is the language barrier. In an attempt to find a solution to the language barrier, I wrote the mini-grant for a classroom cassette player. With the player, I was able to play a taped version of Romeo and Juliet that students were able to follow along with in their books. The results were higher comprehension and enjoyment.
