Student Technology Assistant (STA) Program

The Student Technology Assistant Program is intended to facilitate OTEN faculty in their efforts to integrate technology into their instruction. OTEN faculty will identify a project with which they would like the assistance of a technology expert student. Students will apply for the position of Student Technology Assistant (STA). OTEN Campus Coordinators at each institution will facilitate the connection with an appropriate STA for the faculty's needs.

Goals of the program:

  1. Assist OTEN faculty in incorporating a range of technology options into their collection of teaching tools.
  2. Support career goals of students by providing opportunities to learn and practice current technologies in a professional setting.
  3. Increase the level of effective uses of technology in the curricula at OTEN institutions.

Projects for STA's might include scanning pictures, setting up a web site, etc. However, there is an important value for faculty in learning by doing, so it is not the intent of the program for the STA to do it all. If faculty are going to use a web site or database of pictures, etc. they should learn how to modify a website, scan pictures, etc. This program would be to get tasks done that a faculty member already knows how to do or for the student to help the faculty member learn how to use those technologies.

  • It is the responsibility of the faculty member and STA to arrange a common schedule for working on the project.
  • The STA is expected to perform on a professional level.
  • The STA is alloted a set number of hours for each project. The hours allotted can be extended if the faculty member shows the need to the OTEN Campus Coordinator in advance.
  • The faculty member is responsible for signing the time sheet.

Faculty apply for an STA by filling out the online Faculty Project Application Form.

Students apply for an STA position by filling out the online STA Application Form. The pay rate is $10.00 per hour.

Faculty and STA's must fill out an online Project Evaluation Form at the completion of the project.
